What influences the cost of an air source heat pump?
Every Scottish home is different, which is why a survey matters. The main factors that affect the cost of a heat pump installation are:
- Property size and heat loss. A larger or harder-to-heat home needs a bigger heat pump to maintain comfort, and the heat loss calculation determines the kW output required.
- Hot water cylinder. Most air source heat pump systems include a hot water cylinder. If you don't have a suitable one, a new cylinder is included in the installation.
- Radiators and pipework. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers, so some homes need larger radiators or pipework upgrades to deliver enough heat into each room.
- Underfloor heating. If you are adding or extending underfloor heating, this is part of the works. Underfloor heating pairs well with heat pumps because of its large emitting surface.
- Outdoor unit location. The position of the outdoor unit affects pipe runs and installation time. A surveyor will suggest the quietest and most practical location.
- Controls and weather compensation. Modern systems include weather compensation controls that adjust the flow temperature to outside conditions, improving efficiency.
- System upgrades. Any required electrical upgrades, new pipework, or changes to your heating distribution add to the work involved.
Why a survey comes before a price
A heat pump that is too small for your home will struggle to keep it warm on the coldest Scottish winter days, while one that is too large will cycle on and off frequently, which is less efficient and harder on the equipment. A proper survey calculates the heat loss room by room and sizes the heat pump to your property. That is why we do not give a price without a survey — a meaningful quote depends on understanding your home.
Spreading the cost
Loans available, subject to status. This means you can arrange to pay over time rather than as a single upfront payment, subject to your circumstances and the lender's checks. The finance option is discussed as part of your quote, so you can see what's involved and make an informed decision.
What you receive
After the survey you receive a written quote covering the survey and sizing, the heat pump, any recommended system changes (such as radiators, a hot water cylinder or controls), and the MCS-certified installation. You are under no obligation to proceed — you decide whether to go ahead once you have the full picture.
Pairing with solar and batteries
You can choose to pair your heat pump with solar panels and battery storage. Until 31 March 2027, 0% VAT applies to solar panels and batteries, which is worth bearing in mind if you are considering a whole-home low-carbon set-up. Your surveyor can discuss how a combined system could work for your home.
Next steps
The easiest way to understand the cost for your home is to arrange a no-obligation survey. Complete our quote form or call 0141 230 0198. A surveyor will visit, assess your property, and provide a written quote so you can decide in your own time.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an air source heat pump cost in Scotland? +
There is no single figure because every Scottish home is different. The size of heat pump, the property's heat loss, the number of radiators or underfloor runs, hot water cylinder needs and any upgrades to pipework or radiators all influence the installation. After a survey you receive a written quote for your home. Loans available, subject to status.
Can I spread the cost of a heat pump in Scotland? +
Yes. Loans available, subject to status. This means you can arrange to pay over time rather than as a single upfront payment, subject to your circumstances and the lender's checks.
What makes one heat pump installation cost more than another? +
Larger or harder-to-heat homes need a bigger heat pump. Replacing radiators, fitting a hot water cylinder, upgrading pipework, adding weather compensation controls, and the position of the outdoor unit all affect the work involved. A survey identifies what your home actually needs.
Does a survey cost anything? +
We arrange the survey on a no-obligation basis so you can see what is involved and receive a written quote before deciding whether to proceed with a paid installation.
Will I know the full price before committing? +
Yes. You receive a written quote covering the survey, sizing, the heat pump, any recommended system changes and the MCS-certified installation. Nothing goes ahead until you choose to proceed.
